When it comes to all eLearning courses, content is king. It may be created with the best of intentions and enlightening information but if the delivery is lacklustre or the tone does not resonate, it will fail. So here are 6 quick tips to help you create eLearning content which hits the spot.
Know your audience. It can be easy to focus on what we want to tell our audience rather than what they want or need to hear. Too many creators take their audience for granted and make assumptions regarding their interest and base knowledge. Take time to engage your audience; if possible canvas the opinion of a sample group to establish the correct tone and approach. Never underestimate its value – make a habit of it!
Take your learner on a journey. All good stories move at the right pace to keep their readers engaged. A good story has defined chapters, plot progression and leaves their readers with a sense of fulfilment. The same design principles can create a successful eLearning course. If you think the content is too “dry”, don’t be afraid to embellish it with real life experiences to make bring it alive and show its relevance.
Keep it tight. Remember time is precious to us all, so whilst you need to take your learners on a compelling journey, don’t expect them to bring their lunch! Aim for tea-break size. If you can’t possibly tell them everything in that time, divide the subject into smaller more manageable sections. You can’t eat an elephant in one sitting.
Edit twice. Do it the first time to ensure that it maintains the correct pace and tone, then do it once more to remove words that have sneaked in as fillers, for example “that”, “just” and “truly”. Reading it aloud will also help to get rid of unnecessary words.
Illustrate with imagination. When it comes to adding pictures to the words don’t resort to stock imagery. Being unconventional can establish a more compelling and memorable result. Think laterally and creatively.
Don’t be an island. Resist the creative urge to unveil a finished article. Seek the advice of others and test your project as it develops. Be willing to accept feedback, especially from those who will be using the learning.
